Mrs V. Hargreaves, Year leader: Year 8, writes:
This week was the start of ‘Year 8 Opportunities’ process, where a range of different events have been planned to help students think about their GCSE options and their future plans. This started with Opportunities Afternoon on Monday 14th January where students were introduced to the options process and different pathways, with presentations from Youth Connexions Hertfordshire, new subjects offered at GCSE (Business Studies, Media Studies, Psychology and Child Development) and two Year 13s, William Stringer and Laura Ephgrave, who gave their advice and tips on how to choose options and how their own options led them into the Sixth Form and choosing their future courses at university. At the end of the afternoon, students were given a copy of the Options Booklet to take home and peruse with their parents before the second event, Opportunities Evening on Tuesday 15th January, when parents were invited into school to learn about GCSEs and the options process to be able to support their son/daughter in making the right choices for the start of Year 9. After an initial presentation in the hall by Mrs John (Headteacher), Mrs Hargreaves (Year 8 Leader) and Mr Green (Assistant Headteacher) students and their parents were then encouraged to go and talk to the subject teachers from subjects to find out what is involved in the course and if it is right for them.
Over the next few weeks students will have one to one interviews with senior members of staff before their final decisions are made regarding options. Other key dates to support students in choosing the right options for Year 9 are:
11th March 2019 – PU2 issued
13th March 2019 – Year 8 PTI
15th March 2019 – Deadline for Options Form returns
28th March 2019 – Parent Teacher Surgery to monitor progress
For further information or enquiries regarding options, please contact your son/daughter’s tutor or Mrs Hargreaves (Year 8 Leader) or Mr Sinclair (Year 8 Deputy Year Leader) or speak to a subject teacher if your enquiry is subject specific.
