Science
Science hold a STEM club where the students complete practical activities that develop their team work and leadership skills.
Students’ confidence and engagement in STEM increases as well as their motivation to study STEM subjects and enter STEM careers. The students are encouraged to devise an individual investigation, and over a period of time complete practical activities, produce a written report and work towards a CREST award.
Chemistry and Biology Olympiads, Royal Society of Chemistry
Year 12 and Year 13 chemists and biologists take part in the Chemistry and Biology Olympiad. This UK competition is an opportunity to stretch and challenge post-16 chemistry students by testing their chemical or biological knowledge. The students compete against other schools within the UK completing potentially several rounds within the competition with the aim to represent the UK as well as winning a cash prize for their school
Cambridge Challenge
This competition aims to stretch and challenge students interested in chemistry, and will provide an excellent experience for anyone considering taking their studies further. Set by an experienced team of teachers and university chemists, it is designed to be accessible to Year 12 students but will take them significantly beyond the syllabus and encourage them to think about science in the way they would at university. This competition is open to students studying in the UK in Year 12 or below. Students who do well in the competition will be sent certificates of achievement, and those who perform best will win an invitation to a residential camp at the University of Cambridge at the end of August.
I’m A Scientist and I’m An Engineer
A free online event where school students meet and interact with scientists and engineers. It’s an X Factor-style competition between scientists, where the students are the judges. Students challenge the scientists over fast-paced online text-based live chats. They ask the scientists anything they want, and vote for their favourite scientist to win a prize of £500 to communicate their work with the public.
Outside Speakers and Careers Links
We believe that students will engage with science where they see the broad range of applications it has in the work place and beyond. We actively promote careers by inviting those from industry into school to share their experiences and promote careers in the classroom by embedding them in the curriculum.
