Congratulations to Louise Grenfell (8BM) in continuing her path to becoming the next Jessica Ennis after taking part in the County Individual Pentathlon in Stevenage. Louise came 6th overall despite competing one year down from everyone else in the competition. She also set a PB of 2mins 24seconds in the 800m in the event. Louise has also been selected as a reserve in the county individual squad, again competing a year below all other athletes. Well done!
Year 10 County Trials
Good luck to Alex Khan (10H) who has made it through to the 3rd round of County Football Trials which took place on Friday 24th May. Alex has been selected in the top 30 players within Hertfordshire after two trials already. Good Luck!
Girls Rounders
The girls’ rounders competitions have started this term and Stanborough, as always, are looking strong in many year groups. The Year 7, 8, 9 & 10 team completed a quadruple at Ridgeway. Three out of the four games were very close but Stanborough managed to gain the win by one rounder. The Year 9 team however won slightly more comfortably winning 17.5 – 3. Holly Clayton was the stand out performer for the girls on the night, however all students who took part were amazing as always! The Year 10s finished 4th in their competition against all other schools in the district. A great effort.
There are many more fixtures coming thick and fast this half term, good luck to all the girls taking part!
County Athletics
Stanborough’s talented athletes have started their County League season. This is an opportunity for students to compete and test themselves against the best schools in the county, many of whom are private schools. After three rounds (Ware, St Albans and Stevenage) there have been many notable individual performances including Louise Grenfell who has impressed in 800m and high jump; Bailey Cripps has continued his fine performance with the javelin; Archie Jennings in hurdles; Ollie Parsbey in 400m and shot putt; Isobel Wilkins and Jasper Pruessner in high jump; Matthew Tanner in 100m; Aiden Wadley in 1500m; Thomas Pruett in javelin and Stephen Bates in 200m and long jump. Well done to all who have taken part so far! On the team event the Year 10s are currently topping the Stanborough teams. They are sitting in 12th place overall and could sneak into the top 8 and finals day if they have a good end to the season. Congratulations to all students who have taken part, the commitment they have shown is amazing as many events do not finish until 7pm and they have shown a great attitude in all weather conditions!

On Monday 4th March, our Dance students performed in this year’s Dance Production ‘We’re off to see the Wizard’. This year’s show included featured roles from the story of the Wizard of Oz and the whole production had a narrative thread throughout. Dorothy was danced by Ruth Morgan in 11A, The Scarecrow by Holly Milliken 11K, The Tinman by Robyn Rappaport and The Lion by Abby Mortimer 13B. This year also featured a Year 8 in a lead role, Ciara Keenan 8B gave an excellent performance as Dorothy’s little dog, Toto. The production followed their journey to Oz meeting other characters such as munchkins, ozians and flying monkeys. Each of our leads gave a solo performance before being met by Dorothy, their interpretations were excellent and they produced very clear representations of their character.
During their trip to Munchkinland, we were introduced to three witches, Glinda the Good Witch danced by Tilly North in 10A, The Wicked Witch of the West danced by Amy Sharp 9O and the Witch of the East…. whose feet were played by Miss Conder. Amy and Tilly gave exceptional performances in their solos Are you a Good Witch? and Or a Bad Witch? Their battle duet at the end of the production displayed their excellent choreography and performance skills brilliantly and they danced beautifully together despite being enemies (in the show!)
Once we were welcomed into Oz we met the Wizard who was danced by Charlotte Kerr 11O, in a high energy piece ‘Welcome to Oz’. This piece was put together by Year 13 students Jess Elsley 13K and Abby Mortimer. It was the perfect way to open the second act and included excellent performances from our Year 11 BTEC dancers.
The production showcased the talents of a wide variety of Stanborough students not only by our BTEC Dancers but also included a large number of Dance club pieces, which have all been run by our Dance Captains: Jess Elsley, Abby Mortimer, Freya Elsley, Abbey Turner, Ruth Morgan, Harriet Hawkins, Julia Pietraszko, Beth Chapman, Holly Milliken, Bethan Makowski, Lora Johnson, Tilly North and Teya Kindred. These pieces were as strong as ever, including high quality choreography and performance from our students. Well done to our excellent Dance Captains, impressive work as always.
Several pupils also took advantage of our audition process and there was a particularly memorable quartet by Lousie Grenfell, Ava Connelly, Lauren Saunders and Amelie Warner based on the theme of Good Vs Evil, reflecting the Good and Bad Witch characters. Keziah Long and Chloe Steel performed a fun duet as the Lullaby League welcoming Dorothy into Munchkinland and Millie Batersby and Megan Sproat impressed the audience with their confident duet as Flying Monkeys. Our Lead Flying Monkey was danced by Jay Puranik, who gave a wonderfully menacing performance in his solo.
As Dorothy, Ruth Morgan performed three solos during this show, the first was her only dance in Kansas to Judy Garland’s version of Over the Rainbow. Her second solo contrasted this in a dramatic cover of the same song showing her trapped in the witch’s castle. The third was a tap solo Take me Home, a perfect end to the story and the show.
Other highlights of the show were the year 9 and 10 BTEC assessment pieces. The year 9s performed an emotional contemporary piece Crazy which included solos, contact duets and group sections which they performed brilliantly. Their second piece Salute was a real crowd pleaser, an upbeat number which was their interpretation of the Witch and her guards.
Our Year 10 Dancers performed Cry Me a River, a professional piece of repertoire choreographed by Andrew Winghart. This was an extremely challenging piece as they had to replicate the original work and they really did a superb job. Well done Year 10!
Our Year 12 Dancers wowed the audience with their pieces It’s Raining Men and If I Only Had a Heart. They demonstrated beautifully their versatility as performers and their dances were real stand out moments from the show.
The staff dancers made another appearance this year with their interpretation of the yellow brick road. The piece opened with high energy entrances from Miss Bowen and Miss Newman, and included a set phrase which increased in speed as well as some challenging contact work! In case anyone is wondering, no one was injured during the creation or performance of this piece…
This production demanded a lot from the main roles as they were included in several other dances in order to tell the story, and I have to congratulate them all on their professionalism and tremendous efforts in making the telling of the story successful. The way each one of them managed their time is extremely impressive.
All our dance students took full advantage of performing on a professional stage at the Weston Auditorium with excellent lighting and sound facilities, this truly enhanced their overall performance and helped make this production both magical and memorable.
All our dance students were a credit to themselves and the school throughout the day and during the evening’s performance. They worked extremely hard and should be very proud of all they have achieved.
We’re looking forward to doing it all again next year!

It was a record breaking day on Monday for the PE department and extra curricula clubs. With two football games, seven netball matches and a football training session there were over 200 students involved in just one night! With two more football matches, a football five-a-side, two more netball games, multiple training sessions and lunchtime clubs the number of students involved in PE clubs at Stanborough for this week will be well over 500! Well done to all involved!

Year 7 : Yavneh 10 – 1 Stanborough
Year 10: Yavneh 1 – 3 Stanborough
Stanborough’s Year 10 team continued their unbeaten run in the district league by beating Yavneh on Monday. Stanborough came out of the blocks fast and took an early lead after a great finish from Michael Rodriguez. Bailey Cripps soon doubled the advantage with a fine goal. Yavneh started to grow into the game and Luke Laurence made a fine string of saves to keep the home team at bay. A third goal was then scored by Stanborough, the impressive Rodriguez scoring his second and the third for the greens. Yavneh were able to score just before the break to keep the game alive. An injury to Joe Georgiou meant Stanborough had to make a tactical change and bring on Max Saunders, Cripps was moved to centre back to try and solidify the back line as Yavneh were now pressing for a second goal. A string of brilliant saves from Laurence in the Stanborough goal kept Stanborough’s lead intact and they were able to hold on for victory. Man of the Match was given to Laurence who treated the spectators to one of the finest goal keeping displays seen in a Stanborough shirt.
Stanborough’s Year 7 team suffered a heavy defeat to Yavneh in their district cup match. Stanborough were missing some important players and this made a big difference to the team. Stanborough started the game brightly and were on top for the opening exchanges, unfortunately a string of poor decisions in the back four let Yavneh in far too often and they were clinical in front of goal. The boys will look to lift themselves when they travel to Ridgeway on Tuesday next week.

Year 7: Stanborough A 1 – 5 Monk’s Walk (Girl of the game: IIham Ibrahim)
Stanborough B 8 – 1 Monk’s Walk (Girl of the game: Aimee Ricketts)
Year 8: Stanborough A 6 – 8 Monk’s Walk (Girl of the game: Louise Grenfell)
Year 9: Stanborough B 15 – 7 Monk’s Walk (Girl of the game: Emma Hudson)
Year 10: Stanborough A 19 – 19 Monk’s Walk (Girl of the game: Eve Fitall)
Year 11: Stanborough A 9 – 15 Monk’s Walk (Girl of the game: Georgie Ferguson)
There were plenty of netball matches played this week as Stanborough took on Monk’s Walk in six matches. Stanborough came away with two wins, one draw and three defeats from their matches but it was amazing to see so many girls taking part in netball and sports for Stanborough. A special mention to the Year 7B team who comprehensively beat Monk’s Walk and are now undefeated this year. Stanborough’s Year 9B team also ran out comfortable winners in their game thanks to some great play from Emma Hudson. The Year 10 team took part in a nail biting match against Monk’s Walk which ended in a draw, the girls can feel proud of their achievement but may feel a bit disappointed that they didn’t win after being in front for much of the game. Well done to all students who took part.

District League Results:
Year 10 – Stanborough 4 – 0 Hertswood (J.Read, L.Mann, CJ Gilhooly x 2)
Year 8 – Stanborough 4 – 6 Hertswood
Stanborough Year 10s started the defence of their district title by seeing off Hertswood on Monday evening. Hertswood started strongly and tried to assert their physical presence, however Stanborough soon got into their stride and using their excellent passing game took control of the match. The breakthrough came after 20 mins when Jensen Read coolly finished after a good through ball from Michael Rodriguez. Liam Mann then doubled the score just before half time as Stanborough took complete control of the game. Two debut goals from CJ Gilhooly, which included a fantastic header from a fine Bailey Cripps’ corner and a calm one on one finish after good work from Joe Georgiou, put Stanborough four goals up with plenty of time left in the game. Hertswood became frustrated at this point and became more physical with a number of clashes, however Stanborough kept calm and saw the game out thanks to a fine back line performance from Alex Kahn, Jonathan Biba, Michael Adepoju and Zach Read. Goal keeper Luke Laurence had very little to do in the Stanborough goal but was assured as always if needed. Man of the Match went to CJ Gilhooly.
The Year 7 team took part in a extremely entertaining game against the same opposition. It was the first game the boys had played and it ended up in a10 goal thriller! Stanborough lead the game 1-0, 2-1, 3-2 and 4-3 so will feel extremely disappointed not to come away with something. Despite letting in six goals Jack Tang put in an unbelievable performance between the sticks with a number of fine saves. Well done to all boys who took part and hopefully they will get their first win in Stanborough colours in their next match.
Both Stanborough teams travel back to Borehamwood on Monday evening to play Yavneh. Good Luck!

Stanborough’s netball team played their first fixtures of the season against Chancellors school on Thursday evening. All four games were played to an extremely high standard and in a great spirit. It was the first time the Year 7 squad had played in a competitive fixture for Stanborough and they performed fantastically. Stanborough’s Year 9 and 7B team came away with excellent wins whilst the Year 10 and 7A team were beaten, however all girls played with a great attitude and all PE staff are looking forward to the rest of the matches this year! Well done girls!
Run For Stanborough – House Cross Country overall positions
A huge congratulations to Corey Rodriguez (11Offley) who has been asked to join the County Under 18 football squad. The squad is around 18 in size so to be selected is a fantastic achievement. Students from all schools in the county are sent to the trial but very few are asked to join the squad and it is a big step up in standard, even more so as Corey is stepping up two age categories. This is a huge achievement for Corey and we wish him the best of luck in all of his fixtures and training. His first game will be next week against Essex in the FA Youth Cup.
District Representation
The following boys have all been selected to represent Mid Herts District football squad:
Year 8 – Ben Saunders and Toby Harvey
Year 9 – Ollie Guilar-Butler
Year 10 – Bailey Cripps, Michael Rodriguez, Jensen Read and Alex Khan
The students were selected out of dozens of footballers from the 12 schools in the district and it is a great achievement. The fixtures for the district matches have already started and will run until Christmas. Mid Herts will play the district teams from North Herts, Lea Valley, St Albans and Dacorum. Good luck boys!
There have been many training session and extra curriculum clubs which have started this term. Football training, netball training, badminton club, volleyball club, athletics club, running club, basketball and house dance rehearsals to name a few! These are run at lunchtimes and after school. Keep an eye out for the weekly PE notice in tutor rooms, the PE notice board in the sports hall, the school website and the Stanborough PE twitter @StanPE_dance

CSLA Group: Carlo Fucchi, Liam Cripps, Dylan Price, Becci Harrison, Erica Bridgewater, Emma Horsley, Louise Stokes, write:
On Thursday 24th May, the CSLA group organised a charity Staff vs Students football match to raise money for Breast Cancer Care. There were 14 teachers taking part and 11 Year 12s in the team. In true professional style, all players entered the pitch to the music of the Champions League Final. The crowds were cheering and the fans were screaming. There was also an amazing pick ‘n mix stall, an inflatable dinosaur mascot (thanks to Miss Smith), a great DJ and commentator.
After the captains had exchanged competitive looks, the match started tentatively with both teams trying to get the edge over the other. After a number of forceful exchanges and tackles, including Nathan Curtis sending Mr Marston flying, and some fine defensive headers from Matthew Harrington, the first half ended 0-0.
A brutal team talk at half time meant that both teams came out fighting. The second half started with the young prodigy, Captain Carlo Fucchi, pulling out a drag-back nutmeg on Mr Benzid as the fans went wild. The students won a free kick on the half-way line and Fucchi crossed into the box for a superb headed finish by the lethal striker Liam Cripps. Deadlock was broken.
Eventually, after a long ball from Miss Bowen into the box, a shot was blocked but a controversial handball was given. PENALTY FOR THE STAFF! Mr Marston, turned penalty superstar, scored the equaliser with perfection and panache.
The staff were tiring and the students were pushing for the vital goal, however they could not find it. The game ended 1-1, which called for penalties to be the decider in a best of three format. Mr Maidment stepped up for the first staff penalty and clicked his way to victory. Dylan Price, known as the penalty king, scored the students’ first penalty. Mr Benzid was called upon for the next penalty but was denied when his lacklustre penalty was denied by the flying Scotsman, Matthew McNamara. Ethan Greenaway for the students stepped up and finished with aplomb.
After finishing the sensational penalty to level the scores in the match, it was only right that the teachers’ hero, Mr Marston, was next to take their vital penalty. If he scored, they would level the scores. If he missed, the students would reign supreme. In an attempt to recreate the success he found during the game, he ran up and fired, only to be denied by the heroic keeper McNamara, securing victory for the students.
Celebrations continued into the changing rooms as the students prevailed victors on this historic day in which over £150 was raised for a good cause.
